Meet Nurse Hephzi

Kolkata, India

J.Hephzi Beulah is a deputy nursing manager at Children’s HeartLink partner hospital Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) in Kolkata, India for over 14 years.

Encouraged by her mother and a deep passion for helping the sick, Hephzi became a nurse.

But it was training opportunities provided by Children’s HeartLink that helped her grow into a nurse educator, Today, she teaches junior nurses how to grow in their careers, a role she initially found daunting due to the added responsibility.

Her journey to becoming a nurse educator was made possible through the first-of-its-kind virtual Nurse Residency Program (NRP) developed by Children’s HeartLink, an intensive training course designed to provide foundational knowledge for caring for children with congenital heart disease (CHD).

Despite their value, academic training for nursing in many underserved countries does not adequately prepare them for a specialized pediatric cardiac care setting.

“This is a challenge for me but I put as much effort as I can to teach my nurses—case scenarios, hand overs, taking over procedures and passing on knowledge to the nurses. I am training next line of nurses.”
— J.Hephzi Beulah, deputy nursing manager at Children’s HeartLink hospital partner Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences in Kolkata, India
“Hospitals need strong, well-trained nurses to provide the best care for children with heart disease. Without a dedicated nursing team equipped to handle the unique needs of children with CHD, their heart care will fall short. Every child with CHD deserves the best care, regardless of where they’re born, and that starts with having a nursing staff that meets those needs. Children’s HeartLink trainings like NRP are helping build that future.”
