Expanding Children’s HeartLink’s Transformative Heart Care Policy

Nothing is more powerful than when people come together to share knowledge, experience and expertise to strengthen a community’s ability to care for its children. This is especially true in a place as vast and diverse as Rajasthan—India’s largest state by land area, home to more than 80 million people, higher-than-average birth rates and significant pockets of poverty. These realities make early identification and treatment of congenital heart disease both a challenge and an urgent priority.

That’s why it was so meaningful when the Government of Rajasthan invited Children’s HeartLink and Children’s HeartLink India Foundation to participate in a statewide stakeholder meeting focused on congenital heart disease, covering identification, management, treatment and long-term follow-up.

Government officials, medical professionals, and others seated around large conference room.

Stakeholders across Rajasthan, India gathered to learn about building and scaling congenital heart services.

More than 115 people joined the meeting in person and online, with presence ranging from government officials, senior health department representatives, to clinicians, medical colleges and leaders from institutions across the state. This level of participation signals that Rajasthan is ready to strengthen access to heart care for their children, and they are seeking proven partners who can help them build sustainable systems for this endeavor.

–Bistra Zheleva, Children’s HeartLink Vice President of Global Strategy and Advocacy

To support the request, we brought leaders who have spent years building and scaling congenital cardiac services in India:

Together, we shared insights, data and proven strategies for strengthening congenital cardiac services—because every child deserves a healthy heart, no matter where they are born.

We look forward to continued collaboration with governments, hospitals, and communities that share this belief.

Congenital heart disease is the most common birth defect in India, affecting 240,000 children each year. An estimated 144,000 infants urgently need heart procedures annually—yet 90% lack access to the care they need.
