Strengthening pediatric heart care

India is the world’s most populous country. With 1.42 billion people, it’s also one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Yet the country still struggles with poverty, and children with congenital heart disease face a shortage of pediatric specialists and uneven access to medical care.
Even more sobering, approximately 130 pediatric cardiologists work in the entire country, compared to 72 at Boston Children’s Hospital alone.

The year 2000 marked the beginning of our groundbreaking partnerships in India.

Children’s HeartLink’s partnerships in India go back nearly 25 years and include our first-ever Center of Excellence and first-ever regional training partner. Through the partnerships we’ve built and their successes, Children’s HeartLink is held in high regard among the pediatric cardiac care community in India.

Our significant investment in India is paying dividends on the lives being saved and served—both in children reached and clinician teams trained.

With eight hospital partners, two of which are Children’s HeartLink Centers of Excellence, and a solid foundation, we are making a sustainable and impactful difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of children with heart disease.

In India, approximately 240,000 children are born with congenital heart disease annually, and there is an urgent need for an estimated 144,000 infants to have heart procedures each year. 90% of children born with congenital heart disease lack access to the heart care they desperately need.

Children’s HeartLink’s goal of developing 12 Children’s HeartLink Centers of Excellence in India by 2030 is designed to address this need.
